INTRODUCTORY RITES

When the people have gathered, the celebrant enters during the singing of a hymn suited to the particular celebration. After the singing, the celebrant says:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All make the sign of the cross and reply:

Amen.

The celebrant greets those present in the following or other suitable words, taken mainly from sacred Scripture.

Every blessing comes to us from God our Father,
through the Son, born of Mary.
May his grace and peace be with you all.

All make the following or some other suitable reply.

And also with you.

In the following words, the celebrant prepares those present for the blessing.

God uses ordinary things as signs to express his extraordinary mercy toward us. The Miraculous Medal is one such sign of his goodness and generous gifts bestowed on us through the mother of his only Son.

This medal is also a sign of admission to the Association of the Blessed and Immaculate Virgin Mary, approved by the Church. It expresses your intention of sharing in the spirit of this Association.

Therefore let this medal which you receive show your desire for the goodness of God. May it confirm your decision, rooted in the promises of your baptism, to imitate Christ. May it sustain you in your Christian vocation to evangelize the poor for the praise and glory of the most holy Trinity.

READING OF THE WORD OF GOD

A reader, one of those present, or the celebrant reads a text of sacred Scripture, taken preferably from the readings in the Lectionary for Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or those presented below from the Mass of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal.

A reading from the Book of Revelation (Rev. 12:1,5,14a,15-17)

A great sign appeared in heaven.

A great sign appeared in the sky,
a woman clothed with the sun,
with the moon under her feet,
and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
She gave birth to a son, a male child,
destined to rule all the nations with an iron rod.
Her child was caught up to God and his throne.
But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle,
so that she could fly to her place in the desert.
The serpent, however,
spewed a torrent of water out of his mouth after the woman
to sweep her away with the current.
But the earth helped the woman and opened its mouth
and swallowed the flood that the dragon spewed out of its mouth.
Then the dragon became angry with the woman
and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring,
those who keep God’s commandments and bear witness to Jesus.

The word of the Lord.

OR

A reading from the holy gospel according to John. (John 2:1-11)

This first of his signs Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee.

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee,
and the mother of Jesus was there.
Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.
When the wine ran short,
the mother of Jesus said to him,
“They have no wine.”
And Jesus said to her,
“Woman, how does your concern affect me?
My hour has not yet come.”
His mother said to the servers,
“Do whatever he tells you.”
Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings,
each holding twenty to thirty gallons.
Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.”
So they filled them to the brim.
Then he told them,
“Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.”
So they took it.
And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine,
without knowing where it came from
(although the servers who had drawn the water knew),
the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him,
“Everyone serves good wine first,
and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one;
but you have kept the good wine until now.”
Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee
and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.

The gospel of the Lord.

After the reading, the celebrant gives the homily in which he explains to those present the meaning of the celebration.

INTERCESSIONS

The universal prayer or prayer of the faithful follows. From the intercessions below the celebrant may choose those which seem best suited to the occasion, or may add others which address the particular needs of the faithful.

The Medal of the Immaculate Conception is rightly considered an outstanding sign of our devotion to the Virgin Mary. Therefore, let us call upon the name of the Lord through the intercession of this Blessed Virgin:
R/ Lord, join us more closely to Christ through Mary.
Most merciful Father, through the merits of your only begotten Son you preserved his mother Mary from all stain of sin;
— keep us free from sin. R/
When Mary consented to your word, you chose her as your Son’s companion in his work of redemption;
— through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin grant that your Church may share abundantly in the fruits of redemption. R/
By joining the Virgin Mary to Christ your Son, you made her full of grace;
— grant that we may always find her to be our advocate, pleading for the graces we need. R/
In the Virgin Mary you chose to give us the perfect example of following Christ;
— help us to reflect in our lives the mysteries of our salvation. R/
You taught the Virgin Mary to keep all your words in her heart;
— help us to follow her example, holding fast to the words of your Son in faith and carrying them out in action. R/
You gave the Holy Spirit to your apostles at prayer with Mary the Mother of Jesus;
— help us to persevere in prayer, that we may live by the Spirit and walk in the Spirit. R/
Our Father…

PRAYER OF BLESSING

With hands outstretched, the celebrant continues:

For one—

Almighty and merciful God,
through the Virgin Mary, mother of your Son,
you abundantly manifest your goodness to us
and fill the world with your blessings.
Look kindly now on your servant,
who will devoutly receive this + medal
in honor of the Immaculate Virgin Mary.
Grant that he (she) may become each day
more conformed to the image of Christ your Son,
and with the help of the Virgin Mother,
he (she) may be worthy to share in your life
and in the happiness of your house.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
R/ Amen.

For more than one—

Almighty and merciful God,
through the Virgin Mary, mother of your Son,
you abundantly manifest your goodness in us
and fill the world with your blessings.
Look kindly now on your servants,
who will devoutly receive these + medals
in honor of the Immaculate Virgin Mary.
Grant that they may become each day
more conformed to the image of Christ your Son,
and with the help of the Virgin Mother,
they may be worthy to share in your life
and in the happiness of your house.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
R/ Amen.

CONFERRAL OF THE MEDAL

The celebrant puts the medal on each of the candidates, saying:

Receive the holy medal,
which admits you into the Association of the Immaculate Virgin Mary.
Wear it in faith and handle it with suitable devotion.
With the help of the Virgin Mother, so live
that you may grow more like Christ, the evangelizer of the poor,
and bear witness to him for the glory of the Trinity
and for the good of the Church and the world.
May the most holy and immaculate Queen of Heaven
protect and defend you.
May her intercession obtain
whatever you humbly ask of God
and lead you to eternal joy.
R/ Amen.

As circumstance suggest, the celebrant may, in a clear voice, pronounce the formulary of conferral once for all the recipients. They all join in replying Amen, then go one by one to receive the medal.

The celebrant, in silence, sprinkles all present with holy water.

CONCLUDING RITE

The celebrant concludes the rite, saying:

God, through the Immaculate Virgin Mary,
so inexpressibly united with your Son,
you cause us to rejoice in your great goodness.
As we are supported by her motherly protection,
may we never be without your providential love,
and be always dedicated to the mystery of your redemption
with unbounded faith.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
R/ Amen.

It is preferable to end the celebration with a suitable song.
