The Association of the Miraculous Medal at Saint Mary’s of the
Barrens in Perryville, Missouri, (the Association) is part of the international
pious Association of the Holy Medal of the Immaculate Conception, popularly
known as the Association of the Miraculous Medal, whose original purpose
and statutes were approved and confirmed by Saint Pius X on July 8, 1909.
Revised purposes and statutes of this pious Association of the Holy Medal
were set forth and approved on February 19, 1998, by the Vatican Congregation
for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of the Apostolic Life.
ARTICLE 1. ORIGIN AND NATURE OF THE ASSOCIATION
The Association was established at Saint Mary’s of the Barrens in May,
1918. It is an apostolate of the Congregation of the Mission Midwest Province.
ARTICLE 2. PURPOSE OF THE ASSOCIATION
The Association brings Mary conceived without sin to the Catholics of North
America. She reveals God’s fatherly love and her own motherly concern.
The Association invites members to greater holiness: attending to their pastoral
and spiritual needs, forming them in the Christian life, and involving them
in the apostolate of charity especially toward the clergy and the most abandoned.
The National Shrine of the Miraculous Medal serves as the center of prayer
for the Association. The Shrine is governed by its own statutes, approved on
October 11, 1994.
ARTICLE 3. LEADERSHIP
§1. The Director General
This Association is under the authority of the Director General of the Association
of the Holy Medal of the Immaculate Conception, the Superior General of the
Congregation of the Mission and of the Daughters of Charity.
§2. The Provincial Superior of the Midwest Province
The Association is under the immediate authority of the Provincial Superior
(Visitor) of the Midwest Province with his Council in accord with the law of
the Catholic Church and the proper law of the Congregation of the Mission.
§3. The President
The president of the Association is a priest of the Congregation of the Mission
Midwest Province, nominated by the Provincial Superior and appointed by the
Director General. The president serves for a three (3) year renewable term.
He is responsible for the Association and its activities. He is assisted by
the vice president, the treasurer, the secretary, and other staff as required.
§4. The Vice President
Under the guidance of the president and appointed by him, the vice president
is responsible for the operations of the Association office.
§5. The Treasurer
Under the guidance of the president and appointed by him, the treasurer administers
the assets and finances of the Association. The treasurer gives a financial
report to the president and the Provincial Superior monthly.
§6. The Secretary
Under the guidance of the president and appointed by him, the secretary keeps
the official records of the Association.
ARTICLE 4. FINANCES
The funds received by the Association are to be used to promote its purposes
according to its budget, approved by the Provincial Superior and his Council.
Extraordinary expenses are governed by the Norms of the Congregation of the
Mission Midwest Province. The Association may accumulate or invest funds only
for purposes authorized by the Provincial Superior of the Midwest Province.
ARTICLE 5. MEMBERSHIP
§1. General Members
All the faithful can become general members of the pious Association of the
Holy Medal of the Immaculate Conception and share in the privileges outlined
in its statutes. They are general members who wear the Holy Medal which has
been blessed by a priest.
§ 2. Particular Members
Particular members are registered in the records of the Association. Any individual,
living or deceased, may be a particular member of the Association and share
in all its privileges and benefits. The various classes of particular membership,
any duties of particular members, and the usual donations for particular membership
are described in the current Membership Booklet of the Association.
§ 3. Promoters of the Association
Promoters are those who enroll members in the Association. The number of memberships
required for someone to qualify as a Promoter and any other duties of Promoters
are described in the current Membership Booklet of the Association.
ARTICLE 6. PARTICULAR STATUTES
The statutes of the Association, and any revisions to them, are proposed by
the President and submitted by him first to the Provincial Superior of the
Midwest Province and then to the Director General of the Association for approval.
ARTICLE 7. SPIRITUAL BENEFITS
§1. Liturgical Feast Day
The principal feast of the Association is November 27 (the observance of the
apparition of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal).
§2. Spiritual Benefits of Particular Members
Particular members share in three novenas of Masses and thirty individual Masses
every month. They also share in the Masses and daily prayers offered for them
by the members of the Vincentian community who were supported during their
formation by the Association. The benefits for perpetual members continue as
long as the Association and the National Shrine of the Miraculous Medal exist.
§3. Spiritual Benefits of Promoters
Promoters share each month in the thirty Masses and the three novenas of Masses
offered for members. They also share in a special novena of Masses offered
each month for Promoters and in three other special novenas of Masses offered
each year for them. At their death active Promoters become perpetual members
of the Association. Promoters receive a “Promoter Medal” and a
certificate announcing that they share in a Papal Blessing.
